What Is Play Therapy?

A gentle, evidence-based approach to helping children thrive

Play therapy is a form of counselling designed specifically for children. It takes place with a trained therapist in a safe, welcoming space filled with carefully chosen toys and materials.

For children, play is their natural language. Where adults use words to work through feelings, children use play. During a session, toys become the tools your child uses to express what they might not yet have the vocabulary for.

The therapist gently observes and guides - helping your child process difficult experiences, understand their emotions, and develop healthy ways of coping. It's structured, purposeful, and backed by decades of research.

2

Assessment sessions

Your child meets the therapist and begins to explore the playroom. The therapist observes how your child interacts with toys, expresses emotions, and engages with the space. Together, we'll set clear goals.

Regular sessions

Sessions typically run weekly and last around 45 minutes. Your child leads the play while the therapist gently supports and guides. Most children look forward to their sessions.
